Asus has launched Asus VivoPC, a compact Windows 8 based home-theatre PC that can also act as your primary desktop. The VivoPC features Asus SonicMaster audio technology with external speakers and a 802.11ac Wi-Fi for HD video streaming and web browsing.

While Asus has not revealed majority of the specifications, it has made it apparent that the device will offer expandability in terms of memory. A sliding case cover on the device gives access to two internal memory slots and the drive bay can accommodate a 3.5-inch or 2.5-inch SATA 6GB/s hard drive. The processor and RAM on the device are still unknown. As for connectivity, the VivoPC offers USB 3.0, USB 2.0 and HDMI ports with an SD card reader. There is also optical audio output, a VGA port and audio in/ out.

With the VivoPC, Asus also showcased the VivoMouse, a device that doubles up as a handheld pointer and a desktop mouse. The device incorporates a large circular touchpad with full support for Windows 8 multi-touch gestures. So, put it on the table and it is a desktop mouse. Place it in your hand and it acts as a handheld remote. The touchpad seems to be an interesting way of interacting with your Windows 8 PCs and can be used for pinch to zoom and swipe gestures.

One look at the make of the device and the segment and it is obvious that the direct competitor is the Mac Mini. Both the products seem to be winners in terms of design and looks. Built with a metallic finish, placing something like that in your living room certainly seems worthy.

According to Asus, the VivoPC and VivoMouse will be available in the market in Q3 2013. There is no word regarding the pricing of the two devices as of now.
